This trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in the West Sikkim, prescription
which is famous for its flowers, infection
and spectacular mountain views of Kangchenjunga and Everest. The views are complimented with camping in dense Oak and Rhododendron forest amidst the calls of barking deer and wild birds.

In Barsey one passes through dense thickets of Rhododendrons below the tall mountain ridge laden with conifer forests of silver fir and hemlock. The trek winds its way through the source of two rivers, which originate from moist grassy meadows. After Thulo Dhaap the trail climbs up to the Singalila Ridge and from Phokety one can experience the sunrise on Everest and Kanjchenjunga, the highest and third highest peaks in the world.

Day 1Drive: Bagdogra to Hee Bermiok
Pickup from Bagdogra airport and drive to Hee Gaon, the base village for the trek. Night halt at a village guesthouse.

Day 2Trek: Hee Bermiok to Samathar
The trek commences with a steep climb through mixed rhododendron and bamboo forests. On the way cross small quaint villages which seem to have been lost in time. O/n in tents.

Day 3Trek: Samathar to Barsey
Your ascent continues through the thick forest amongst the chirping of the birds. As you keep climbing up you see the transition from a temperate forest to a rhododendron forest. In the afternoon we explore some trails around Barsey. O/n in tents.

Day 4Trek: Barsey to Joreybotey
Today’s walk is long but an easy one, mainly through rhododendron and mixed temperate forests. On a clear day you will get grand views of the Kangchenjunga range from this camp; from Kumbhakarna all the way till Mt. Narsing. O/n in tents.

Day 5Trek: Joreybotey to Thulodhap
Today’s trek continues on the ridge till a final short climb gets you to a dried lake name Thulo Dhap. This is by far the most scenic campsite on your trek. Relax for the remainder of the day, absorbing the beauty of the place . O/n in tents.

Day 6Trek: Thulodhap to Kalijhar
After breakfast commence a steep ascent to the top ridge of Barsey, from where you can get magnificent views of Kangchenjunga range. A gentle climb up gets you to your high camp of Kalijhar. O/n in tents.

Day 7Trek: Kalijhar - Uttarey, Drive to Pelling
Start walking by 4 am to Phoktey Dara view point from where you can enjoy a grand sunrise over Everest and Kangchenjunga. Absorb the sheer tranquility and beauty of the place.

After breakfast descend down all the way till Uttarey. The initial part of the route runs along the Nepal border, providing good views of the Nepalese villages on the other side.

On reaching Uttarey drive to Pelling. O/n at a hotel in Pelling.

The advent of spring infuses a completely new life in the temperate slopes of the Sikkim Himalayas. Entire slopes are transformed into a color pallet of rich reds, Hepatitis
yellows and pinks. The air is thick with the fragrance of the blooming rhododendrons.

The Barsey Rhododendron trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim, which houses 13 different varieties of rhododendron species. Entire hill slopes are covered with Arboreum, Falconeri, Barbatum, Hodgsoni and Campanulatum, the most commonly found rhododendron species in this sanctuary. The flowering season also attracts a plethora of bird species making it a delight for bird watchers. The panoramic views of the Kangchenjunga range further add to the spectacular beauty of this trek.

Day1Bagdogra to Sombarey
Pickup from Bagdogra airport and drive to Sombarey. O/n at forest guesthouse in Sombarey.

Day 2Trek: Hilley to Barsey
A short drive from Sombarey gets you to Hilley, the starting point of our trek. From here your trek commences over an undulating path through a mix of bamboo and rhododendron forests teeming with birds. This campsite offers us our first glimpse of Kangchenjunga . O/n in tents.

Day 3Trek: Barsey to Jorebotey
Today’s walk is a long but easy one, mainly through rhododendron and mixed temperate forests. Your path would be dotted with blood red and pink shaded rhododendron Arborium forests, brought to life by chirping of birds.

A short climb towards the end will get you to your campsite, which offers a stupendous view of the Kangchenjunga range. O/n in tents.

Day 4Trek: Jorebotey to Thulo Dhap
Continue traversing through hemlock and rhododendron forests, accompanied by the mighty Kangchenjunga. A final one hour climb will get you to a beautiful meadow where you set camp.

Day 5Trek: Thulo Dhap to Chitterey
A steep two hour climb gets you to the top ridge of the sanctuary, from where you traverse across the ridge. From Chewabhanjyang, a steep descent through rhododendron forests will get you to your campsite. O/n in tents.

Day 6Trek: Chitterey to Uttarey, Drive to Pelling
Continue your descent through mixed temperate forests teeming with birds to reach the serene village of Uttarey.

After breakfast drive to Khecheopalri, a tranquil laike nestled in the midst of verdant forests. From here drive to Yuksom, the first capital of Sikkim. In the evening visit Pemayangtse monastery. O/n at a hotel in Pelling.
Day 8Pelling to Bagdogra
Drop to Bagdogra airport.
