This trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in the West Sikkim, which is famous for its flowers, and spectacular mountain views of Kangchenjunga and Everest. The views are complimented with camping in dense Oak and Rhododendron forest amidst the calls of barking deer and wild birds.
In Barsey one passes through dense thickets of Rhododendrons below the tall mountain ridge laden with conifer forests of silver fir and hemlock. The trek winds its way through the source of two rivers, which originate from moist grassy meadows. After Thulo Dhaap the trail climbs up to the Singalila Ridge and from Phokety one can experience the sunrise on Everest and Kanjchenjunga, the highest and third highest peaks in the world.

Day 1 | Drive: Bagdogra to Hee Bermiok Pickup from Bagdogra airport and drive to Hee Gaon, the base village for the trek. Night halt at a village guesthouse. | 6.5 hrs | 1800 m |
Day 2 | Trek: Hee Bermiok to Samathar The trek commences with a steep climb through mixed rhododendron and bamboo forests. On the way cross small quaint villages which seem to have been lost in time. O/n in tents. | 5 hrs | 2494 m |
Day 3 | Trek: Samathar to Barsey Your ascent continues through the thick forest amongst the chirping of the birds. As you keep climbing up you see the transition from a temperate forest to a rhododendron forest. In the afternoon we explore some trails around Barsey. O/n in tents. | 5 hrs | 3000 m |
Day 4 | Trek: Barsey to Joreybotey Today’s walk is long but an easy one, mainly through rhododendron and mixed temperate forests. On a clear day you will get grand views of the Kangchenjunga range from this camp; from Kumbhakarna all the way till Mt. Narsing. O/n in tents. | 7 hrs | 3029 m |
Day 5 | Trek: Joreybotey to Thulodhap Today’s trek continues on the ridge till a final short climb gets you to a dried lake name Thulo Dhap. This is by far the most scenic campsite on your trek. Relax for the remainder of the day, absorbing the beauty of the place . O/n in tents. | 4 hrs | 3062 m |
Day 6 | Trek: Thulodhap to Kalijhar After breakfast commence a steep ascent to the top ridge of Barsey, from where you can get magnificent views of Kangchenjunga range. A gentle climb up gets you to your high camp of Kalijhar. O/n in tents. | 4 hrs | 3485 m |
Day 7 | Trek: Kalijhar - Uttarey, Drive to Pelling Start walking by 4 am to Phoktey Dara view point from where you can enjoy a grand sunrise over Everest and Kangchenjunga. Absorb the sheer tranquility and beauty of the place. After breakfast descend down all the way till Uttarey. The initial part of the route runs along the Nepal border, providing good views of the Nepalese villages on the other side. On reaching Uttarey drive to Pelling.
