Towering Buddhist monasteries set in stunning landscapes, makes the Tawang Tour in West Arunachal one of the most popular circuit with tourists. Starting from the plains of Assam your road winds up the verdant valley formed by the Kameng river. This region is mainly inhabited by the Monpas, a benevolent Buddhist tribe.

 

This trip would take the visitor to some spectacular places having a high historic and cultural quotient like the Tawang monastery and Dirang dzong. Stunning landscapes would greet you at every stop, from the tranquil Sangti valley to the fabled Sela pass to the glacial lakes of Tawang.

Day 1: Guwahati to Bhalukpong                                                               

After breakfast drive to Bhalukpong on the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. O/n at Tourist Lodge

Day 2: Bhalukpong to Dirang                                                      

After breakfast continue your drive by the Kameng valley. En route stop at Tipi Orchid Centre, admiring the wide variety of Orchids. The road keeps getting more scenic as you climb up the verdant valley. O/n at a hotel in Dirang

Day 3: Dirang sightseeing

In the morning visit the Dirang dzong, built sometime in the 15th century to keep the invading Tibetans at bay. From here proceed to the serene and picturesque Sangti valley. By afternoon come back to Dirang. O/n at a hotel in Dirang

Day 4: Dirang to Tawang                                                              

Your road keeps climbing up till Sela Pass at 13,700 feet. Take a short break over here to click some snaps of the spectacular landscapes and of the Sela Lake. On crossing the pass you enter into Tawang district , en route visit Jang waterfalls and Jaswant Ghar. O/n at a hotel in Tawang

Day 5: Tawang

Visit the grand Tawang monastery built by Merak Lama in 1680. This magnanimous monastery is the second largest in the world, housing over 500 monks. The monastery also has a museum with many Buddhist artefacts and manuscripts , making it well worth seeing. Interact with the friendly monks to learn about Buddhism and their simple way of life.

In the second half visit the War Memorial, built to commemorate all those who lost their lives in the 1962 war with China. O/n at a hotel in Tawang

Day 6: Tawang

The upper reaches of Tawang are dotted with numerous glacial lakes , many of which can be driven to. Start early for your excursion to P.T Tso lake and Sangetsar lake, admiring many other smaller bejewelled lakes on the way. Those who wish to go to BumLa can visit the high pass on the Indo – China border, provided they have got the necessary permits one day prior. O/n at a hotel in Tawang

Day 7: Tawang to Bomdila                                                           

Commence your long descent down till Bomdila. O/n at a hotel in Bomdila

Day 8: Bomdila to Tezpur                                                            

After breakfast drive all the way down to Tezpur in Assam. O/n at hotel in Tezpur

Day 9: Tezpur to Guwahati                                                         

Drop to Guwahati airport
